An official PGA TOUR event, the Tampa Bay Championship is a 72-hole that includes week-long activities. The tournament is a proud part of the PGA Tour Florida Swing - a group of four top-flight tournaments in as many weeks on outstanding courses - the Copperhead, PGA National, Bay Hill and Doral.
The tournament has a new name and logo, though the Tampa Bay Championship will be played with the same $5.5 million purse in its customary date on the schedule – third week of the Florida Swing – as part of the PGA TOUR's FedExCup competition. The tournament will again be broadcast by NBC Sports,GolfChannel and other PGA TOUR broadcast partners.
Luke Donald, the world's number one player for much of 2012, is the defending champion. The tournament on Florida's central gulf coast has been a full-field PGA TOUR event since 2000, and has been held in the spring since the beginning of the FedExCup in 2007. Copperhead Charties, Inc. organizes the event which has generated nearly $30 million for Tampa Bay area charities via various golf events since 1977. The Copperhead Course was ranked as one of the top 10 courses on the PGA TOUR in a 2012 survey of PGA TOUR members.
